We came, we saw, we burned brightly. Nevada desert 2010.
The Burning Man is one of Americans greatest contributions to world culture, at least that was my abiding thought as I danced in the dust with a peacefully co-existing mixture of people that seemed to span this entire globe, if not a few more besides.
The photo is of my wonderful wife Chantal at the night of the burn itself. The burning man takes place on a dried out riverbed over 200 miles long where the alkaline dust has had cowboys, horses and cattle coughing their lungs up for just as long. Now ravers, artists and persons of all types torture their lungs, cast off their prejudices and much of their cloths to show some of the more positive aspects of this species, the human being I mean.
There is something to be learned by all societies from this gathering where money is lowest on the scale of what is important, art is way up there sharing a happy hierarchy with co-operation, tolerance and most of all fun.
The above art work was created in the theme of the burn the year we went 'cities'. Commissioned by good friend and dance school creator Anica Lowe, it explores the theme of cities in terms of 'cities of the mind'. It has social icons from disparate cultures co-existing in the one mind, or person.
